Brazilian Senator Demands the Supreme Court Extradite Bolsonaro from the U.S.

Senator Renan Calheiros sent a request to Brazil’s Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes for the immediate extradition of the country’s former president Jair Bolsonaro from the United States, reports G1.

The senator claims that the politician is “actively involved and responsible” for the actions of the protesters.

Calheiros demands the inclusion of Bolsonaro in the investigation of the situation of the rallies and his subpoena to explain the ex-president’s participation in anti-democratic actions.

The senator requested an order to return the politician to Brazil within 72 hours, and in case he fails to do so, he demanded pre-trial detention for him.

Jair Bolsonaro flew to the United States late last year, unwilling to take part in the transfer of power to the country’s new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A day earlier it became known that he had been hospitalized in Florida with severe abdominal pain.

U.S. Democratic Congressmen Joaquin Castro and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for their part, called on U.S. authorities to “stop granting asylum” to the former Brazilian president and to extradite him to his homeland.

Bolsonaro’s supporters, protesting against the election results since late last year, seized the congress building in the Brazilian capital on January 8, stormed the grounds of the Planalto Palace, the presidential residence, as well as the Supreme Court building, the media reported. Only by the evening the police managed to clear the government buildings from the protesters, detained more than 400 people.

The day before the security forces in Brasilia launched an operation to disperse the camp of protesters, located near the headquarters of the armed forces of the country.
